GUWAHATI: Amid the gloom over surge in
Covid-19 cases in Assam, doctors at the region's biggest and most advanced Covid-19 facility at the
Guwahati Medical College and Hospital (
GMCH) ushered in bundles of joy by helping 10 Covid-positive mothers deliver their babies in the last two days.
Breaking the news, health minister
Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday tweeted, "At times, we get opportunity to smile amid adversity too! We've such an occasion, second day in a row. Ten #COVID19+ braveheart mothers have given birth to 4 baby girls and 6 boys. Congratulations to the families. Kudos to O&G team of GMCH for performing cesarean sections," he tweeted.
Sarma later said, "All are
healthy babies. The mothers have also recovered and few of them have already been discharged and reached their homes. It is big achievement for doctors."
"Along with the Covid ward at GMCH, we have also an exclusive OT to cater to those who, besides needing Covid treatment, also needs surgeries like expecting mothers or even someone with fractured bones. In fact, our doctors have also carried out a neuro-surgery on a positive patient," Sarma added.
GMCH superintendent Dr Abhijit Sarma told TOI that among the 10 mothers, seven went under the scalp for CS delivery and the other three had normal delivery.
"The babies are healthy and their weights range from 2.5 kg to three kg. The mothers have recovered from the surgery as well as Covid-19 and some of them have been already discharged from hospitals and have reached their homes," Dr Sarma said.
He added, "All of them were referred to GMCH by private hospitals after they became Covid-19 positive. There are 54 other expecting mothers at this Covid ward here at GMCH."
Earlier on July 16, a 93-year-old Covid-19 positive woman admitted to the hospital recovered and was discharged. The next day, another 80-year-old woman was discharged from the GMCH after recovery.
