Kerala reports 821 Covid-19 positive cases, 642 contact cases

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The highest single day count of 821 Covid-19 positive cases was reported in Kerala on Sunday. Of this 642 are contact cases, which raises severe concern of community spread prevailing in certain areas. The total number of positive cases reported in the state till date has now become 12,480. The number of active cases in Thiruvananthapuram is now 1,884.
Two deaths were also reported in the day; one of 75-year-old lady from Uppala in Kasaragod and the second of 67-year-old lady from Aluva in Ernakulam. The Covid-19 death toll in the state has now become 43. Among the contact cases, the source of infection of 43 cases is unknown and 13 are health workers. Among the healthcare workers who got infected, six are from Thiruvananthapuram, four in Ernakulam and one each from Idukki, Kozhikode and Kasaragod.
Thiruvanantahpuram continues to record the highest number of contact cases with 203 on Sunday. Apart from this, 84 contact cases were reported from Ernakulam, 70 in Palakkad, 61 in Kollam, 48 in Kasaragod, 34 in Alappuzha, 28 in Idukki, 27 in Thrissur, 26 in Kozhikode, 24 in Pathanamthitta, 12 in Kottayam, 10 in Malappuram and two in Kannur.
Among the new cases, 110 are returnees from foreign countries and 69 have come back from other states. Thiruvananthapuram recorded the highest number opositive cases with 222 cases, followed by 98 in Ernakulam, 81 Palakkad, 75 Kollam, 61 Thrissur, 57 Kasaragod, 52 Alappuzha, 49 Idukki, 35 Pathanamthitta, 32 Kozhikode, 25 Malappuram, 20 Kottayam, 13 Kannur and one from Wayanad.
Meanwhile, the test results of 172 patients who were undergoing treatment were declared negative. So far 5,373 patients have been cured of Covid-19 and 7,063 patients are still under treatment for the infection in the state.
As many as 1,70,525 people are under surveillance across the state. Of those being monitored, 1,63,216 are under home or institutional quarantine and 7,309 are in hospitals. 866 persons were hospitalised on Sunday.
During the last 24 hours, 18,267 samples were tested. Till now, a total of 5,32,505 samples have been sent for testing and the results of 5,060 samples are yet to come. Of these, 96,288 samples collected from priority groups such as health workers, guest workers and people with more social exposure as part of sentinel surveillance and 91,566 samples were negative.
On Sunday 26 more places were announced as hotspots while seven were excluded taking the total number of hotspots in state to 318.
