MANGALURU/UDUPI: The
coastal districts continued to wilt under sheer number of
Covid-19 positive cases that were reported in
Dakshina Kannada and Udupi on Sunday. Combining for a total of 419 cases, including 285 in DK alone, the districts are now perched second and fifth respectively with 3,596 and 2,223 total positive cases recorded till date out of the 30 districts in
Karnataka and
Bengaluru Urban topping the dubious list with 31,777 cases.
Sunday’s combined total for two districts is the worst single-day spike for Udupi and Dakshina Kannada. With this, Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts have 2028 and 584 active cases, respectively. Two more Covid linked deaths were reported in Dakshina Kannada – that of a 77-year-old woman from Mangaluru and a 53-year-old male, also from Mangaluru. Both these patients had a history of comorbidities that hastened their end.
Dakshina Kannada deputy commissioner Sindhu B Rupesh said 104 patients were discharged during the day both from
district Wenlock Hospital, the designated
Covid-19 hospital and from other private and medical college hospitals in the district. This takes the total number of those discharged to 1491. The continuing spurt in cases also cast its shadow on forthcoming festival season with Kudupu temple closing its doors for the nag panchami festivities.
Health authorities in Udupi discharged 42 patients during the day taking the total number of those discharged to 1628. While Udupi accounted for 60 out of 135 cases reported during the day, Kundapura and Karkala accounted for 52 and 23 cases, respectively. Deputy commissioner G Jagadeesha said 98 patients are in home isolation and case for the day including 31 diagnosed with influenza like illness, SARI, and people with history of travel.
