Maharashtra reported 9,518 Covid-19 cases on Sunday – the highest single-day spike since the onset of the pandemic. The last highest spike was recorded three days ago at 8,641. Overall, 3.1 lakh cases have been recorded in the state since March.
Meanwhile, Maharashtra state textile minister Aslam Shaikh on Monday said he has tested positive for coronavirus and is isolating himself. He informed that he is currently asymptomatic and has urged all his contacts to get themselves tested.
Across the state, 258 people succumbed to Covid-19, up from the previous-day toll of 144. With this, the state has reported a toll of 11,854 deaths so far.While all 36 districts recorded Covid-19 cases on Sunday, at least 12 recorded more than 100 cases. Mumbai accounted for only 10 per cent of the cases at 1,038, while Pune surpassed it with 1,812 cases
In what indicates a fast viral transmission in areas other than Pune and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), districts like Gondia, Bhandara, Chandrapur, Wardha and Gadchiroli, which had been recording one or two cases, are now showing an increased count. Gadchiroli reported 17, Chandrapur 14, Bhandara eight, Wardha five and Gondia four cases on Sunday.
It took only six days for the state to record around 50,000 cases. Of the cases recorded on Sunday, about 30 per cent (2,860) were recorded in the MMR, followed by Pimpri Chinchwad (851), Nashik (565), Raigad (385), Aurangabad (318), Vasai Virar (276), Kolhapur (206), Panvel (187) and Jalgaon (148).
The number of COVID-19 cases in Maharashtra's Aurangabad district rose to 10,854 after 51 more people tested positive for the disease on Monday, an official said. Three more deaths due to COVID-19 were also reported in the district, taking the toll to 399, he said.
Out of the 51 new cases, 17 were reported from Aurangabad city and 23 from rural parts of the district. The other 11 cases were found during rapid-antigen tests at checkposts set up by the Aurangabad Municipal Corporation. As of now, there are 4,314 active cases in the district, while 6,141 patients have been discharged after recovery, the official said.
As preparations of the 10-day festival of Ganesh Chaturthi that begins next month is underway in Mumbai, BMC is urging Ganesh mandals in Andheri, Juhu and Versova to follow the concept of 'one ward-one Ganpati' during the festival as a precautionary measure against coronavirus.
Vishwas Mote, the assistant municipal commissioner of K-West ward(covers Andheri-West, Juhu, Versova and other areas) in a letter urged all mandal corporators in the area to implement these measures."To avoid overcrowding and for maintenance of social distancing, there is also a plan of accepting Ganapati idols at the society gates for immersion," he wrote.
So far, 5,813 COVID-19 cases and 258 deaths have been reported in nearly 150 Ganpati mandals located in the K-West civic ward.(With PTI inputs)

India saw a record single-day jump of 40,425 COVID-19 cases, pushing its tally past the 11-lakh mark on Monday. Maharashtra reported the highest number of cases at 3,10,455 and reported 258 fatalities out of the 681 total deaths reported in the country.

He is the fourth minister to have been infected by the novel coronavirus after state ministers Jitendra Awhad, Ashok Chavan and Dhananjay Munde who have recovered from the virus now.
As cases among inmates and staff in prisons across Maharashtra continue to rise, the state prison department has said that while random testing of inmates is being sought, it has not been happening at some places due to the overall burden on the health machinery.There are now 16 prisons in Maharashtra which have reported Covid-19 infections with 851 cases, which includes 643 inmates and 208 staff members.(Read Sushant Kulkarni's report here)
The number of coronavirus cases in Pune city surpassed the 37,000 mark Monday, with a single day spike of 1,508 new cases on Sunday. Pune's caseload stands at 37,386 with 976 fatalities, 41 more people succumbing to the infection in the last 24 hours,a health official said.
India's case fatality rate(CFR) dropped below 2.5% for the first time, according to the data released by the Union Health Ministry.
While attributing this drop in CFR to “reporting of cases to the hospital within 24-72 hours” of the patient showing symptoms, sources in the government monitoring the pandemic in the country said the data raise a key red-flag: that some of the deaths in states such as Maharashtra and Gujarat, which have a CFR higher than the national average, were “avoidable”.

Faster identification through increased testing and early treatment by isolating Covid-19 patients have helped the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) bring down fatality rate to below three per cent, which is closer to the national figure. However, the concern remains about the critical rate of 4.28 per cent, which has posed a challenge to the capabilities of the health infrastructure in the city.
As on July 17, PMC brought down its fatality rate due to the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) to 2.69 per cent, closer to 2.53 per cent for the entire country. PMC had a higher fatality rate than that of the state and country, but in the last one month it has come below the state fatality rate, which is now at 3.91 per cent. Read more
