PM Modi assures to extend help to Assam: CM Sarbananda Sonowal

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has assured to extend all support to Assam which is battling floods, oil well fire and coronavirus pandemic, said chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Sunday following a telephonic conversation with the PM.
Taking to his Twitter account the CM Sonowal said that the Prime Minister took stock of the contemporary situation regarding the damaged caused by floods in Assam and Baghjan oil well fire along with the contemporary Covid-19 pandemic situation.

An official at the chief minister's office said that Sonowal informed Modi about all the measures the state has taken so far in dealing with the problems faced by the people, reported PTI.
The total number of people killed in this year's flood and landslide has gone up to 107 across the state, of whom 81 were killed in flood-related incidents and 26 died due to landslides, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said in its morning bulletin.
Floods have hit over 27 lakh people in 26 of the 33 districts of Assam and destroyed houses, crops, roads and bridges at several places
On the Covid-19 front, Assam has recorded 22,981 cases, of which 10,503 have been reported from the Guwahati city alone. The death toll rose to 53.
Making matters worse, a gas blowout had occurred at Oil India Limited's well number 5 at its Baghjan Oilfield, in close vicinity of Dibru Saikhowa National Park and Maguri Motapung Beel, on May 27 which was followed by an inferno on June 9. The damaged well has been spewing gas uncontrollably for the last 54 days displacing thousands of families besides leaving an adverse impact on the biodiversity of the region.
