'Nepalese' youth got Rs 1,000 to get tonsured in Varanasi

Dharmendra Singh claimed he was paid Rs 1,000 by the VHS.
VARANASI: The "Nepalese" youth tonsured by the fringe saffron outfit Vishwa Hindu Sena in Varanasi in protest against Nepal Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli's remarks about Lord Ram claims he was paid Rs 1,000 by the VHS to agree to get his head shaved.
On Saturday, two days after his video went viral, the youth - Dharmendra Singh - appeared before the Varanasi police of his own accord and claimed his family has been in India for several generations, that he holds both an Aadhaar and an Indian voter ID card, and that his ancestors came from Nepal.
The police have so far arrested six people involved in the alleged forced tonsuring. The main accused, VHS chief Arun Pathak, however, is still evading arrest. SSP Amit Pathak said on Saturday further investigation was on and that they were engaged in a manhunt for Arun Pathak.
The SSP said Dharmendra (25) lives in government quarters in Bhelupur area with his brother, a Jal Sansthan employee.
