
Maharashtra, Mumbai, Pune Coronavirus News Live Updates: Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray Monday highlighted how the World Health Organisation has taken note of coronavirus situation and handling in the “densely-populated Mumbai” and so did the newspaper “ Washington Post” which has praised their efforts for the same.
“We have contained the spread of the novel coronavirus. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has taken note of it, The Washington Post, too, has praised it. But our test is still not over. All machineries should be alert to bring the graph of cases down and not remain off-guard,”an official quoting Thackeray said.
Pune district reported its highest single day spike in covid cases as it added 2,601 fresh infections in the last 24 hours, taking the total casecount in the district to 54,013 on Monday, a health department official said, PTI reported. A lockdown has been imposed in Pune city, Pimpri-Chinchwad and parts of Pune rural from July 14 to July 23, in an effort to curb the spread of the infection.
Maharashtra’s COVID-19 tally rose to 3,18,695 on Monday with the addition of 8,240 new cases, while the death toll crossed the 12,000-mark, the state health department said. With 176 new deaths in a day, the state’s fatality count increased to 12,030, the department said. A total of 5,460 patients were discharged from hospitals, taking the number of recovered persons to 1,75,029, the department said in a statement. There are 1,31,334 active cases in the state at present.
With 12 more people testing positive for novel coronavirus on Monday, the tally of cases in Dharavi slum sprawl here has reached 2,492, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said. Dharavi now has 147 active cases. The BMC said 2,095 of 2,492 patients have already been discharged from hospitals.
Meanwhile, Maharashtra state textile minister Aslam Shaikh on Monday said he has tested positive for coronavirus and is isolating himself. He informed that he is currently asymptomatic and has urged all his contacts to get themselves tested.

Nearly four months after the Maharashtra government restricted inter-district travel as part of the lockdown, Transport Minister Anil Parab said on Monday that the state is looking at allowing people to travel to Konkan for the 10-day Ganesh Chaturthi, beginning August 22. He added that a proposal to this effect has been presented to Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and the modalities and duration of qurantine for those going home for the festivities are being worked out.(Read Iram Siddique's report here)
Pune district reported its highest single day spike in covid cases as it added 2,601 fresh infections in the last 24 hours, taking the total casecount in the district to 54,013 on Monday, a health department official said, PTI reported. Out of the new cases, 1,690 were reported from Pune city and 657 from the Pimpri-Chinchwad region. The number of positive cases in rural and Pune Cantonment Board areas increased by 254.
Rising instances of police personnel testing positive after making an arrest have prompted changes in pre- and post-arrest procedures in police departments across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. As on Monday, 1,596 police personnel in the state had active infections and 87 have died.
Men arrested in a variety of offences, from theft in Andheri and murder and kidnap in Mira Road to the villagers accused of lynching three men in Palghar in April, have tested positive after their arrest. The ongoing strict lockdown in Pune will not be extended beyond July 23, but there will be some restrictions in place in the city to curb the spread of coronavirus, a district official said on Monday. Addressing a press conference, district collector Naval Kishore Ram said the lockdown restrictions, which are in place in the city until July 23, will not be extended.
Authorities imposed a strict lockdown from July 14 until July 23 after the western Maharashtra city witnessed a surge in COVID-19 cases. Meanwhile, the Federation of Trade Associations of Pune (FTAP), warned of protest if the lockdown is extended beyond July 23.
A lockdown will be imposed from 10 pm on July 22 to July 30 in Sangli in Maharashtra due to rise in coronavirus cases, Guardian Minister Jayant Patil said on Monday.
Patil, also state water resources minister, reviewed the COVID-19 situation in the western Maharashtra district, some 390 kilometres from here, during the day. "We were not willing to impose lockdown again in Sangli district. However, patients are increasing in some parts, hence we have to declare lockdown out of helplessness. People have cooperated during the lockdown till now. Hope they will cooperate in the time to come too," Patil tweeted.
He said the lockdown will be enforced strictly in municipal areas of Sangli and Miraj and municipal council areas, and urged people from rural areas to observe "Janata curfew".

The BMC said 2,095 of 2,492 patients have already been discharged from hospitals. The civic body has stopped sharing the latest death toll, if any, from Dharavi. The slum colony, once a COVID-19 hotspot, was hailed by the WHO a few days back for flattening the transmission curve.
The number of COVID-19 cases in Maharashtra's Aurangabad district rose to 10,854 after 51 more people tested positive for the disease on Monday, an official said. Three more deaths due to COVID-19 were also reported in the district, taking the toll to 399, he said.
Out of the 51 new cases, 17 were reported from Aurangabad city and 23 from rural parts of the district. The other 11 cases were found during rapid-antigen tests at checkposts set up by the Aurangabad Municipal Corporation. As of now, there are 4,314 active cases in the district, while 6,141 patients have been discharged after recovery, the official said.
As preparations of the 10-day festival of Ganesh Chaturthi that begins next month is underway in Mumbai, BMC is urging Ganesh mandals in Andheri, Juhu and Versova to follow the concept of 'one ward-one Ganpati' during the festival as a precautionary measure against coronavirus.
Vishwas Mote, the assistant municipal commissioner of K-West ward(covers Andheri-West, Juhu, Versova and other areas) in a letter urged all mandal corporators in the area to implement these measures."To avoid overcrowding and for maintenance of social distancing, there is also a plan of accepting Ganapati idols at the society gates for immersion," he wrote.
So far, 5,813 COVID-19 cases and 258 deaths have been reported in nearly 150 Ganpati mandals located in the K-West civic ward.(With PTI inputs)
The number of COVID-19 cases in Pune district crossed the 50,000-mark on Monday after 473 more people tested positive for the disease. The district's current case count stands at 51,885 with 1,343 fatalities. Pune city accounts for over 37,000 cases out of the district's total caseload.
India saw a record single-day jump of 40,425 COVID-19 cases, pushing its tally past the 11-lakh mark on Monday. Maharashtra reported the highest number of cases at 3,10,455 and reported 258 fatalities out of the 681 total deaths reported in the country.

As cases among inmates and staff in prisons across Maharashtra continue to rise, the state prison department has said that while random testing of inmates is being sought, it has not been happening at some places due to the overall burden on the health machinery.There are now 16 prisons in Maharashtra which have reported Covid-19 infections with 851 cases, which includes 643 inmates and 208 staff members.(Read Sushant Kulkarni's report here)
The number of coronavirus cases in Pune city surpassed the 37,000 mark Monday, with a single day spike of 1,508 new cases on Sunday. Pune's caseload stands at 37,386 with 976 fatalities, 41 more people succumbing to the infection in the last 24 hours,a health official said.
India's case fatality rate(CFR) dropped below 2.5% for the first time, according to the data released by the Union Health Ministry.
While attributing this drop in CFR to “reporting of cases to the hospital within 24-72 hours” of the patient showing symptoms, sources in the government monitoring the pandemic in the country said the data raise a key red-flag: that some of the deaths in states such as Maharashtra and Gujarat, which have a CFR higher than the national average, were “avoidable”.
