Two men barge in, shoot sarpanch on dinner table in Rohtak

ROHTAK: Two men entered the house of the 75-year-old scheduled caste (SC) sarpanch of Chidi village in Rohtak district on Thursday night and shot him dead when he was having dinner.
The men who killed Balkrishan Valmiki shot from close range and then ran out of the house to speed away on a motorcycle, alleged Kuldeep Kumar, complainant and son of deceased.
He said he tried to chase down the accused and he could identify them by face.
Deputy superintendent of police Shamsher Dahiya said the sarpanch died on the way to PGIMS in Rohtak. He said police were hopeful of making early arrests, but the motive behind the crime was not yet clear.
"We have registered a case of murder under Indian Penal Code," police said.
Sources in the village said some youth from the dominant caste of the village had approached Valmiki durin the day to get some documents stamped, but am argument took place between them. In a fit of rage, the accused opened fire at the sarpanch in the night.

Reacting to the sarpanch's killing, former chief minister and leader of opposition Bhupinder Singh Hooda said law and order in the state had "completely collapsed" under the BJP government's tenure.
"Every day, there are reports of murder, robbery and theft from all over the state. There is jungle raj in Haryana. Today, people are neither safe outside or inside their homes. This is unfortunate and tells us how brazen criminals have become," he said.
Hooda asked the government to give proper compensation to deceased Balkrishan Valmiki's kin and a government job to a member of the family.
He said they had repeatedly highlight lawlessness in the state to the government, but nothing was being done.
