Telangana woman delivers outside hospital after being referred to another facility

A woman gave birth on a road outside a government hospital in Telangana on Sunday after doctors referred her to another state-run facility as she required blood transfusion, which was temporarily unavailable, PTI reported.

Hospital officials said they would seek clarification from the staff to find out if there was any delay in shifting the woman in an ambulance and also verify the CCTV footage.

According to a hospital official, the woman was not admitted to the hospital in Jangaon since the blood bank there was shut after an employee tested positive for Covid-19 recently. While the ambulance personnel were waiting for the attendants to take a call, the woman suddenly delivered the baby near the entrance of the hospital, following which she was taken inside. The Telangana government had earlier announced 10 per cent additional pay to all government personnel at the frontline in the fight against Covid-19. At a meeting on Friday, Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao approved a proposal to give the additional pay to government doctors, paramedical staff, and everyone working in the health department, including contractual employees and those roped in from private agencies, policemen, and sanitation workers in municipalities and panchayats. An additional sum of Rs 100 crore has been allotted to the health department to implement the move.

Meanwhile, on Sunday, Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao said he will hold a meeting with officials and architects on Tuesday to finalise the design of the proposed Secretariat building complex to come up in Hyderabad.

While the country’s Covid count has crossed the million-mark, with 26,816 deaths as on June 18, the case fatality rate (CFR) has for the first time dropped below 2.5 per cent. At 2.49 per cent, India’s CFR is 1.78 percentage points lower than the global average.

According to data released by the Union Health Ministry on Sunday, 29 states and Union Territories have a CFR that is below the national average, with 14 states reporting a CFR of less than 1%. While attributing this drop in CFR to “reporting of cases to the hospital within 24-72 hours” of the patient showing symptoms, sources in the government monitoring the pandemic in the country said the data raise a key red-flag: that some of the deaths in states such as Maharashtra and Gujarat, which have a CFR higher than the national average, were “avoidable”.

Meanwhile, in two letters published in the Indian Journal of Medical Research (IJMR) on Saturday, scientists from AIIMS Delhi and AIIMS Raipur have critiqued the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) study that found hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) an effective preventive drug against coronavirus in healthcare workers.

A June 1 ICMR study found a correlation between healthcare workers testing negative for Covid-19 and healthcare workers taking a high HCQ dosage (four or more). The methodology comprised interviewing Covid-positive healthcare workers and Covid-negative healthcare workers to plot their HCQ usage.

The letters argue the study’s reported correlation with increases in infection with low HCQ doses (less than four) was a concern, that association of protection and HCQ was “spurious”, and that serious side-effects need to be examined before administering the drug to healthcare workers.
