THE RESTAURANT THAT BURNS OFF CALORIES
★★★
9.30pm, SBS
The compulsion to dress up science in increasingly bizarre gimmicks is becoming tiresome. Here, it’s a gym attached to a restaurant in which the super fit are obliged to exercise until they’ve burned off the calories being consumed by the restaurant’s patrons. I know. On the upside there is actually a lot of interesting facts packed in here, from the genetic basis of weight loss or gain, to the effects of stress and the gut biome on obesity.

Series return ★★★½
3.30pm, SBS Food
A homely, lo-fi but fascinating food/travel series that manages to go beyond the obvious. Season three opens in Culiacan, a city – as our charming host, chef Pati Jinich notes – was once best known for its drug cartels and heroin trade but whose fertile surrounds are now back to being Mexico’s food bowl. Great rustic recipes and a great insight into Mexican culture and cuisine.

AMERICA’S GOT TALENT
★★★½
8.30pm, Seven
Got Talent is unique among talent shows in that it consists almost entirely of auditions. They’re certainly the best bits. And while the UK version may have more dancing dogs (my favourite) the US version certainly doesn’t want for variety. Tonight’s episode opens with a little poppet from Australia with a voice to raise the roof. Judges Sofia Vergara and Howie Mandell are entranced; Simon Cowell simply looks calculating.
