LUDHIANA: The Sahnewal police in the Ludhiana district of Punjab have arrested a Punjab police constable on corruption charges on Friday. It is alleged that the constable, after taking bribe of Rs 40,000, changed the FIR of NDPS Act into the Excise Act.
The constable, Surinder Kumar, was posted at Kanganwal police post.
Inspector Inderjit Singh, SHO at Sahnewal police station, said that on July 8 Surinder Kumar claimed that he had arrested Sanjay Upadhyay of Mahalaxmi Nagar, Giaspura with 13 bottles of illicit liquor from his locality. An FIR was lodged against Upadhyay under the Excise Act. Later on, the police got information that in reality the constable had recovered 500 gm cannabis, not liquor bottles.
When this matter came to light, assistant commissioner of police (South) Jashandeep Singh conducted the investigation.
ACP Jashandeep Singh said, “During investigation, the police identified that constable Surinder had recovered cannabis, but rather than registering a case under section of the NDPS Act, the constable registered a case under the Excise Act and had shown recovery of liquor bottles. He has also taken Rs 40,000 bribe for this.”
“Actually, NDPS Act is a non-bailable section whereas on the spot bail is given in the Excise act if the recovery of liquor is below 36 bottles. Besides, as per the directions of Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh there is zero tolerance policy in drug recovery. The police have arrested both constable and Sanjay Upadhyay in this case” added ACP.
