Ford Sierra RS Cosworth Prototype Is A Proper Rally Car For The Road

A 1985 Ford Sierra RS Cosworth will be auctioned online in the UK later this month, and while all Sierra RS Cosworth models are special, this one is particularly desirable.

A look into the history of this car reveals that it was part of Ford’s ‘Pre-Production Prove Out Program’ and is differentiated from most production models in certain respects. For example, there is no rear window washer, the lid for the fuse box is black rather than white, there is no first-aid box, and there is a brace between the engine and gearbox to reduce vibration.

Interestingly, it is also thought that this Sierra RS Cosworth was one of the press cars used in the UK and also the star of a Ford ‘Cars Of The Future’ TV advertisement. It also happened to be built on November 21st, 1985, a full nine months before the car’s official production run started.

After the car spent its formative years in the UK, it was exported in 1994 to New Zealand, where its British owner emigrated. In 1999, it was sold to the owner of a Ford dealership in New Zealand, while in 2009, it was purchased by an enthusiast in Auckland with 62,000 miles (100,000 km) on the clock. It was later brought back to the UK in 2016 and has been stored in a climate-controlled classic car facility ever since.

It has 68,000 miles (~109,400 km) on the clock and The Market expects it to sell for between £39,000 and £59,000 ($49,000 – $74,000).
