Mumbai Police nabbed a man in a smuggling case after he remained absconding for 23 years. 53-year-old Harish Kalyandas Bhavsar alias Paresh Zhaveri was wanted for smuggling gold and diamonds without paying due taxes.

The case dates back to 1997 when Zhaveri and his brother evaded taxes of Rs 130 crore.

According to a report in The Times of India, Paresh Zhaveri used to import raw gold and diamonds from Singapore but evaded paying taxes. This prompted the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to launch a probe and the man was issued detention orders. However, he escaped.

The chase finally ended with Mumbai Police crime branch finally nabbing him after 23 years on Wednesday. Police have also nabbed properties of Zhaveri’s brother.

ED had issued a detention order under Cofeposa (Conservation of Foreign Exchange and Prevention of Smuggling Activities) Act in 1997 for smuggling gold and diamonds.
