PATIALA: With the Covid-19 crisis hitting railways revenue, officials have decided to focus on increasing the freight business. The railway board, Ambala railway division has set up business development units (BDU) for the purpose.
Ambala divisional railway manager Gurinder Mohan Singh said the BDU had got in touch with freight customers dealing with commodities like foodgrains, fertiliser, cement, sugar, food processing, power and automobiles, paper and FMCG supply chain. He said as most of these industries are located in Haryana, Punjab, Chandigarh and Himachal Pradesh, the railways wish to serve them better and generate revenue.
Singh said the railways have come up with various concession schemes, piecemeal freight, traffic garland trains and goods shed improvement works to attract more business and freight customers are showing keen interest.
