Nagpur: Shrugging off its past performances, Nagpur division fared well this year to finish at fifth place among the nine divisions in Maharashtra state board Standard XII results declared on Thursday. Last year, Nagpur had finished at the bottom while in 2018 it was second-last.
The division, which has the dubious distinction of finding itself at the bottom of the table, secured its best performance in five years by securing an impressive pass percentage of 91.65%, a jump of 9.14% in comparison to last year and 4.08% over 2018. It’s also the first time in last five years that the division managed to cross the 90% barrier, considered as merit marks. Previously, it had crossed the barrier with 92.11% in 2015.
Gondia topped the division for the second year in a row with 94.13% pass percentage, followed by Bhandara at its last years position with 93.58%. Last year, Gondia had a success rate of 87.99% while Bhandara was at 84.53%. Nagpur district is at third spot with 92.53%, which is an increase of 8.21% as compared to 2019. Wardha district continued its poor performance and ranked last in the division with 87.40%.
The biggest surprise was the backward district of Gadchiroli, which witnessed a big jump of almost 20% against last year and 7.66% as compared to 2018. Last year, the Naxal affected district had secured a pass percentage of just 68.80% after board officials cracked down on cases of unfair means with increased surveillance. It has been faring at the bottom among six districts in the division since the last couple of years.
Even repeaters have fared exceptionally well this year as their success rate jumped by 20.46% in comparison to last year. Their pass percentage was 42.95% against 22.49% in 2019.
A total of 1.56 lakh fresh candidates appeared for the exams of which 1.43 lakh managed to clear it. Among them, the highest 67,742 students from the science stream cleared the exam with 98.08% pass percentage while 49,784 cleared arts stream with 84.61% success rate. The commerce and Minimum Competency Vocational Course (MCVC) streams had success rates of 91.70% and 87.47% respectively.
Officials caught 147 students indulging in malpractices during exams and during evaluation 44 were found guilty of using unfair means.
Senior board officials from the city office attributed the success to various awareness drives it had conducted, particularly in the rural areas, to make the examinees aware about not adopting unfair means like copying or impersonation.
