EXCLUSIVE: Star neurosurgeon, 56, slams model wife, 41, for trying to 'ruin his career' and 'manipulating the system' to falsely accuse him of assault - as he returns to work after being cleared of any wrongdoing

  • Neurosurgeon Dr Timothy Robert Steel, 56, was suspended back in February
  • He was charged with domestic violence offences but was found not guilty
  • Dr Steel has now been given back his medical registration and is back at work
  • His model wife Emma Steel was found to be an 'inconsistent witness' in court
  • Dr Steel's lawyer slammed Mrs Steel, 41, for trying to 'manipulate the system'

A high-profile neurosurgeon who was wrongly accused of assault by his model wife says she tried to 'manipulate the system' and ruin his career.

Dr Timothy Robert Steel, 56, will today return to work for the first time since the  court case in which he was cleared of attacking wife Emma, 41.

The former model had claimed her neurosurgeon husband, who earns $6 million a year,  kicked, slapped and punched her inside their eastern Sydney home the morning after a Christmas party last year.

But NSW Local Court Magistrate Vivien Swann found Mrs Steel to be an 'inconsistent witness' and dismissed the charges against Dr Steel earlier this month.

That decision led Dr Steel to be reinstated by the Medical Council of NSW - who had suspended him until the case was resolved -  with his lawyer Paul McGirr telling Daily Mail Australia his client 'couldn't wait to get back to work' on Thursday.

'The fact that the medical council immediately lifted his suspension after all charges and AVOs were dismissed at court after an overwhelmingly strong case is pretty indicative of the fact that Dr Steel did absolutely nothing wrong,' Mr McGirr said.

'Dr Steel can’t wait to get back to work and put this sorry saga behind him.

'His wife tried to manipulate the system by ruining his career, but the court and medical council were not fooled.'

Dr Steel was suspended by the medical council on February 11, but he appealed their decision to the NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal.

While NCAT found the medical council was legally OK to suspend him, within days of the NSW Local Court hearing ending the council ended their suspension.

'Fortunately the medical council have had access to all the evidence where Dr Steel was found to have lawfully acted in self defence after he was awoken and attacked by his wife, who was not a witness of credit,' Mr McGirr said.

'Therefore what NCAT found - bearing in mind they did not have all the evidence - is null and void because NCAT was only determining the issue of whether or not he should have been suspended.

'All other findings in respect to the incident were purely speculative and most were proven to in fact be falsehoods invented by his wife.'

In addition to domestic violence claims, Mrs Steel accused her husband of financial abuse, despite the court hearing she had a monthly allowance of some $24,000.

After four days of evidence Downing Centre Local Court magistrate Vivien Swain found there were inconsistencies in Mrs Steel's evidence and dismissed all matters.

Dr Steel's solicitor, Paul McGirr, had described Mrs Steel as a witness of 'very little credit' and an 'unhinged person' who made up allegations against her husband.

'I relation to her, she will make up anything to suit herself,' Mr McGirr told the court.

'The catalyst for all this is money. She was treating Dr Steel like a walking ATM.'

In a video tendered to court Mrs Steel told police: 'He grabbed my hair, pulled my hair, ripped out my hair extensions.

'He's kicking me, he's pushing me, I fell on the floor a couple of times and I was calling out for help.'

Dr Steel had faced charges of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, common assault and damaging property.

The former model's 19-year-old son from an earlier marriage to jockey Shane Dye also gave evidence against her, describing Mrs Steel's obsession with money.

Jack Dye said his mother regularly complained Dr Steel did not give her enough funds, despite being paid the enormous monthly allowance.

As well as making allegations of domestic violence, Mrs Steel had claimed her husband was having an affair and suggested he cut up a lacy red pair of her underwear.

'Dr Steel was the victim of her vicious attacks,' Mr McGirr said.

'Poor old Dr Steel is the one getting his reputation sullied. Emma Steel is a woman who is playing the system and playing the victim.'
