MCG has hired a private agency to keep a check on sewage dumpingGURUGRAM: To check illegal dumping of sewage waste in public areas by tankers and individuals, MCG has decided to impose penalty up to Rs 50,000 for the violations.
The civic body has hired a private agency for three months (trial) to keep a check at different sites across the city, and take action against the violations, including illegal dumping, collection and transport of sewage waste. On behalf of MCG, the agency has been authorised to issue challan or notice to the violators as per the policy, that includes impounding of illegal carriers and machinery used for emptying of septic tanks, collection, transportation and unsafe disposal of sewage.
The MCG joint commissioner said, “All seized vehicles will be impounded and released only after the fine is paid.” He also said the penalty amount for single violation has been fixed at Rs 25,000. And for second continuing violation, penalty of Rs. 50,000 will be charged, he said.
The agency will be responsible for collection of revenue as per the challan and deposit the same directly to MCG. As per the terms and conditions, the agency will get 50% of the revenue collected from challan. The agency has been directed to share daily report in this regard with the office of joint commissioner (headquarters).
A senior official said recently the civic body constituted four teams, one for each zone, to check illegal dumping of construction waste. Through this, MCG earned huge revenue in form of challan issued for dumping of waste at unauthorised sites.
“Therefore the agency has been hired on trial basis for three months to check illegal dumping of sewage waste too. If the results are positive, the civic body will hire more agencies for the purpose,” he added.
Two weeks back, urban local bodies (ULB) department had asked the MCG to set up a proper monitoring mechanism for checking illegal dumping of sewage through tankers and by independent houses and condominiums and to submit a compliance report before the NGT.
The department had also asked civic body to identify independent houses, condominiums and tankers releasing untreated sewage and conduct a survey to check whether food outlets, restaurants and hotels are treating their waste water by installing the modular STPs and also following the solid waste management rules 2016 are being followed or not.
