17 new Indian Netflix originals that you need to look out for in 2020

From romance dramas and biographical works to comedy and animation, the long lineup covers it all

Do you prefer a light-hearted slice-of-life drama or a dark comedy? Would you rather go for an edge-of-the-seat crime thriller or an inspiring coming-of-age story? And how about animated features? In case you're confused, it's only natural that you have no definite answers to these questions—our needs differ according to our moods. While a few days are meant to cosy up and indulge in a romance drama with the partner, others call for a mysterious tale that you sit and enjoy all by yourself. With 17 new Indian originals—across genres—being dropped by Netflix in the upcoming months, you wouldn't be short of choices.

The stories will range from a romantic series adapted from a YA novel, a show on designer Masaba Gupta's life, to a multi-starrer comedy film featuring a few of Bollywood's most renowned performers—and much more.

Ludo

Directed by Anurag Basu, the anthology comedy-drama revolves around the life of four people who finally cross each other's path at some point. While the trailer and release date of the film are not out yet, we know that it features an ensemble cast of Abhishek Bachchan, Rajkummar Rao, Aditya Roy Kapur, Fatima Sana Shaikh, Sanya Malhotra, Pankaj Tripathi and Pearle Maaney.

Torbaaz

The poignant tale, starring Sanjay Dutt, is about a man who has risen above his personal tragedy, and is now working to change the lives of refugee kids on the path to destruction. The story of transformation also comes with the sport of cricket playing a pivotal role.

Raat Akeli Hai

The edge-of-the-seat crime-thriller stars Radhika Apte and Nawazuddin Siddiqui among others. Centred around a small-town murder, the film explores the theme of patriarchy as a narrow-minded cop investigates the case to stumble upon a family's dark past.

Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare 

The stirring drama taps into the lives of two cousins who live in the developing outskirts of New Delhi. The women, while navigating their love-hate relationship with each other, are on a quest to find freedom from the constructs of society and family. With one another's help, they finally manage to do so.

Ginny Weds Sunny

Expect a twisted tale of love, weddings and music in this Yami Gautam- and Vikrant Massey-starrer romcom. As Ginny's (Gautam's) mother finds a suitable guy for her in Sunny (Massey), a lot comes to the surface about the two young adults.

Bombay Rose (2019)

The award-winning animated feature has been acquired by Netflix for its world premiere. Gitanjali Rao's romance film was the first ever Indian animation film to open Venice Critics Week last year—and now, will be available for you to stream at home in the upcoming weeks. It involves a club dancer escaping from the clutches of child marriage.

Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl

The real-life story of the first Indian female Air Force officer to fly in a combat zone during the 1999 Kargil War, Gujan Saxena: The Kargil Girl stars Janhvi Kapoor in the lead role. The tale takes us through Saxena's journey and her intrepid feats.

Tribhanga - Tedhi Medhi Crazy

Featuring Kajol, Tanvi Azmi and Mithila Palkar as the protagonists, Tribhanga - Tedhi Medhi Crazy presents a peek inside the issues of a dysfunctional family. The term ‘tribhanga’ is an asymmetrical, yet mesmerising Odissi dance pose—and the creators found a similarity between this and the lives of the three women.

Kaali Khuhi

Kaali Khuhi is a horror drama set in a village of Punjab, which a 10-year-old girl has to save from the spirits of the past. The film features Shabana Azmi, Satyadeep Mishra, Sanjeeda Sheikh and Riva Arora.

Serious Men

Based on Manu Joseph's 2010 fiction, the film is about an ambitious underachieving father who takes advantage of his son's boy-genius fame to improve his family's social status. But as he does, worse things await fr him in the future.

Class of ’83

In this intense police drama, a shunted policeman goes way out of his way to teach the corrupt bureaucracy a lesson. Although he trains five assassins for good, it all comes hurling back at him when the time is ripe. The movie stars Bobby Deol in the lead role.

AK vs AK

This dark comedy features director Anurag Kashyap and actor Anil Kapoor as themselves. As Kashyap has kidnapped Kapoor's daughter, he records every bit of the star's search to make his next breakout release. Staggering much?

Mismatched

A series adapted from Sandhya Menon's book When Dimple Met Rishi, Mismatched chronicles the life of a duo that must navigate a group of odd friends, bullies, arrogant professor and each other to build an app within three months. All this while, the boy is looking for the love of his life and the girl is a content techie.

A Suitable Boy

Ishaan Khatter, Tabu, Tanya Maniktala, Rasika Dugal, Shahana Goswami and Ram Kapoor come together to star in this historical tale set in a newly-independent India. Revolving around the life of a literature student, the film explores her defiance of social norms as she breaks with tradition to embark on a journey of love.

Masaba Masaba

The biographical series is based on the inspiring life of Masaba Gupta, her career, family, a unique past and more. The show comes with a touch of humour, and features the designer and Neena Gupta as themselves.

Bombay Begums

The contemporary drama centres around the lives of five women from different age groups, tackling their personal crisis, desires and vulnerabilities simultaneously. As they navigate the trying situations at hand, they find a friend in each other.

Bhaag Beanie Bhaag

The coming-of-age comedy-drama, starring Swara Bhaskar, is about a young girl who runs away from home to pursue a career in stand-up comedy. As she leaves her comfortable life for greater pursuits, she has her family and a boyfriend to deal with.
