Dr Azizuddin contracted infection in the line of duty at Virangana Avanti Bai Hospital. The untimely death of the young and promising doctor left his family devastated. He is survived by his wife and three children.
The state bulletin mentioned three deaths in Lucknow on Wednesday, taking the toll to 40 since the outbreak of the pandemic in the city on March 11, with 50% deaths dying in the past 15 days alone — at the rate of one death every 18 hours. Of total casualties so far, majority were elderly with comorbidity.
SGPGI director Prof RK Dhiman confirmed that Dr Azizuddin, who was admitted a week ago with severe lung infection, died due to respiratory failure. He was put on the ventilator and was also given antiviral drug Remdesivir, but could not survive, he added.
Avanti Bai Hospital director Dr Neera Jain said, “He was serving at a neonatal care unit of the hospital and was tested on June 24 after developing fever. After testing positive for the infection, he was admitted to Lokbandhu Hospital and later shifted to KGMU after his condition deteriorated. When there was no improvement, we had to take him to SGPGIMS.”
So far, three doctors suffering from Covid-19 have died in Lucknow, including 72-year-old ex-Balrampur Hospital director and neurosurgeon, Dr Shyam Swaroop, who had retired from services, and two doctors from other districts who were undergoing treatment in city hospitals.
