THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In a suspected case of suicide, a 53-year-old man, who was under quarantine in the Covid ward of Thiruvananthapuram Government Medical College hospital was found hanging in the ward on Thursday morning. The deceased was identified as Nizaruddeen of Anchal in Kollam district.
The police said that he was found hanging from the ceiling fan around 6am by a staff nurse. Though he was immediately shifted to the intensive care unit, he could not survive.
Nizaruddeen was admitted as an inpatient in the hospital after sustaining injuries in a fall on July 9. He had allegedly fallen from a tree, sustaining multiple fractures. He was undergoing treatment in the Ward 18 of the hospital since then.
"On Wednesday another patient in the same ward was declared to be Covid positive. He shared the bed close to Nizaruddeen’s bed and hence the hospital authorities shifted the latter to the quarantine ward immediately," said an officer of Medical College Police.
The hospital authorities have initiated steps to test the body for Covid infection and post-mortem examination.
This is the third suicide of a person under Covid quarantine being reported at Thiruvananthapuram Government Medical College. A month ago, two men had allegedly died by suicide in a span of just few hours while under observation in the quarantine wards.
