New Ranip resident applies for broadband, loses Rs 1lakh to online fraud

Getting anew broadband connection proved very costly for a New Ranip resident who ended up losing around one lakh rupees to online cyber frauds . A complaint in this regard has been filed with Sabarmati police.
Hitesh Kansara (32) lives in New Ranip and works as an engineering manager with a private company which has its office in Prahaladnagar .
After one-and-a-half months, he received a call where the caller claimed to be from ‘JioFiber’ and told Kansara that in order to get a broadband connection, he will first have to fill up a KYC form. He said the form can be accessed through the link which will be sent to Kansara’s cellphone.
Kansara opened the ‘APK’ file after it got downloaded on his cellphone. When Kansara could not upload his KYC details, he called up the caller once again. The caller told Kansara that he would check and get back to him soon. However, soon, through twotransactions around one lakh rupees were debited from Kansara’s credit card and transferred to a website.
Later an application with cyber cell was filed, and a subsequent complaint with Sabarmati police was registered in this regard.
Commenting on the case,Sabarmati PI RH Vala said, “This is a case of fraud through online link. The complainant received OTP on his mobile phone and it seems that through the link the crooks gained access to the complainant’s account and the cyber fraud was executed. We are going through the transaction details as well as other details of the case and further investigation is going on.”
