Six people, including security guards and other management staff of Roorkee Institute of Technology (RIT) in Uttarakhand’s Roorkee, have been arrested for allegedly assaulting two African students.
According to the police, both the students have been hospitalised. The incident took place in the college campus in Bhagwanpur police station area on Wednesday, and the arrests were made later in the night.
Police Circle Officer Abhay Kumar said that two students belong to Nigeria and Guinea.
A college spokesperson said the two, both students of engineering, had been rusticated about a week back for violating rules about movement in and out of the hostel laid down in view of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Kumar said that during investigation, some college authorities said that the students had been directed to leave their hostel rooms. Security staff had gone to the hostel on Wednesday to get them to vacate their rooms, which led to an argument that escalated.
“Some college sources have also said that the two were trying to leave the hostel in violation of rules, and security staff tried to stop them, which led to the clash. We are investigating the matter,” Kumar said.
Kumar said six people, including security guards and staff of the college management, have been arrested in the matter.
