Mr. Mukesh Ambani, Chairman and Managing Director of Reliance Industries Limited addressed the first-ever virtual Annual General Meeting of RIL and announced many new initiatives that Jio will be focusing on going ahead. Jio also announced that another US Tech giant – Google will be buying a 7.7% stake of INR 33,737 crore in its digital unit after Facebook Inc in late April. With Google’s backing, Jio will be developing an operating system for entry-level smartphones, made in India 5G network, Jio Glass, Jio TV+, and more. Here’s a lowdown of everything that Jio announced on Wednesday:
Jio 5G: Made In India 5G Network
Reliance Industries announced its plans for its upcoming 5G connectivity services that will be Made In India from scratch which will enable Jio to launch a “world-class 5G service in India”. Ambani stated that this 5G solution will be ready for trials as soon as the 5G spectrum is available in India and can be ready for field deployment next year. He also assured that upgrade from 4G to 5G will be easy.
Google buys a 7.7% stake in Jio Platforms
Reliance has been on a fundraising spree since April with many big investors coming on board. After Facebook and Qualcomm, it’s the search engine giant, Google has picked up a 7.7% stake of INR 33,737 crore in Jio platforms. With this deal, Reliance has sold 32.84% stake of Jio and raised a total of INR 1.52 Lakh crores.
Android OS for Entry-level Smartphones
With Google’s backing, Jio has announced to launch an Android Operating system for affordable smartphones. This Android OS will be optimized to work for phones with entry-level hardware and even the Play Store will be optimized to work accordingly.
An Affordable Smartphone developed by Jio-Google
Jio and Google have also entered a commercial agreement for developing an entry-level affordable smartphone with an Android-based operating system and access to Google Play Store. This means that these smartphones will allow users to download Google family apps such as Gmail, Google Maps, Hangouts, among others.
Jio plans to make a “2G Mukt” Bharat
With this initiative, Ambani wants India to be “2G mukt” soon and offer affordable “4G or even 5G” smartphones running on an Android-based operating system.
Jio TV+ for Jio-Fibre set-top-box users
Isha Ambani and Akash Ambani conducted virtual demonstrations of the new Jio TV+. Jio TV+ will curate OTT platforms such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Hotstar, and others, into one app. Besides this, it is also equipped with voice search.
JioGlass Unveiled
JioGlass will connect to your smartphone to browse the internet. It weighs only 75g, offers best in class, immersive mixed reality services. Remains connected by a single cable and already has 25 apps that allow augmented reality video meetings and more. On the audio front, the Jio Glass features a personalized audio system and supports all standard audio formats.
A new Edu-tech platform
Reliance Jio showcased its plans to merge the JioMeet video conferencing platform and JioGlass mixed reality glass to create a specialized edu-tech platform.
JioMeet Health Hub for Doctors
Jio Health Hub, a part of JioMeet’s expansion plans will be developed to help doctors offer video consultations.
JioMart to expand to more cities
“JioMart is built upon two fundamental pillars — 1. A powerful omnichannel tech-platform to unite customers, kiranas, and producers. 2. A widespread physical network of Reliance Retail that takes benefits of new commerce to every corner” said Isha Ambani. She also shared details of how JioMart is empowering offline kirana stores, in partnership with Reliance’s strong retail network. She revealed that its beta pilot programme in 200 cities has received positive feedback.
