A Bunch Of 2022 BMW 2-Series Coupes Were Spied In Germany

Not long after one of our spy associates photographed the all-new BMW 2 Series Coupe testing in Mexico, we scooped up a bunch of different G42 prototypes at the brand’s home city of Munich in Germany as they were preparing to go out for their daily test drives. And yes, there are a couple of Toyota Supra Mk5s parked in the lot next to other BMWs.

In the latest images, we see both regular and what could be either M Sport kit-equipped or M240i models with a lip spoiler, colored brake calipers and polygon-shaped exhaust surround finishers. [Updated 7/16/2020]

The redesigned BMW 4-Series Coupe went into production earlier this month, and now the company is turning its attention to the next-generation 2-Series Coupe.

Caught undergoing testing in Mexico, the redesigned model is heavily disguised but appears to have a wide grille that is flanked by curvy headlights.

While the grille is covered by camouflaged, the wide lower opening suggests it will eschew the controversial ‘buck tooth’ design of the 4-Series. Given that, we’re sure a number of fans will breathe a sigh of relief.

The rest of the car appears pretty evolutionary, but we can see it will feature flush-mounted door handles similar to those used on the upcoming i4. The bodywork also appears a tad more streamlined, although there will be aggressive side skirts.

The camouflage does a pretty good job of hiding the rear end, but there’s a dual exhaust system and a small rear spoiler. We can also get a glimpse of the taillights, but it’s not clear if those are production units.

BMW has been tight-lipped about the upcoming coupe, but it wouldn’t be front-wheel drive like the 2-Series Gran Coupe. Instead, the model will be underpinned by the rear-wheel drive CLAR architecture.

Engine options are a bit of a mystery, but the car could be equipped with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that develops around 255 hp (190 kW / 258 PS). We can also expect a six-cylinder engine and previous reports have suggested there will be an M2 with a detuned version of the twin-turbo 3.0-liter engine that is found in the X3 M and M4 M. It’s rumored to have more than 420 hp (313 kW / 426 PS).

The 2-Series Coupe is expected to be introduced next year, but nothing is official at this point.
