Sibley's struggle

Sibley continues to struggle but still continues to survive. Tries a reverse sweep against Chase and fails. Is rapped on the pads by an inswinger from Holder. This partnership building up will be troubling the West Indies fielders though. ENG 143/3 after 61

22:02 (IST)16 Jul 2020
Stokes attacks

Holder, with 2.3 degrees, is getting the most swing among bowlers, a Sky Sports graphic shows. Alzarri is getting 2 degrees, while Roach and Gabriel are getting 1 degree. An extra slip in place for Holder, as Sibley continues fending away. Maiden over, with Holder resisting the temptation to go for an lbw review off the last ball. Spin continues from the other end, with Gabriel still only having bowled 7 overs today. Stokes gives Chase the charge with a lofted shot but the ball stops in the outfield. 50 partnership comes up with that. He finds a solid connection later in the over to bring up a boundary. ENG 139/3 after 58 overs

Chances for WI, but partnership builds for ENG

Holder brings himself on with two slips and a gully in place for Stokes. Has a broad smile on his face as Stokes almost prods at one. Holder brings one back into his pads later in the over. Chase gets a ball to grip and draws an edge from Stokes, getting first slip interested, but Stokes survives. This partnership now worth 49 off 149 balls. ENG 130/3 after 56

21:46 (IST)16 Jul 2020
West Indies persist with spin

Chase continues with Roach. Considering that West Indies will probably not get a chance to bowl with the second new ball today, might it have been a good strategy to save Chase for a long spell for the end of the day? The low light has already been an issue before today, Chase might come handy towards the end of the day in that respect too. Gabriel is back on the field after the Tea break, even though he is looking a bit stiff. Holder has not bowled an extended spell so far today. ENG 125/3 after 54

21:38 (IST)16 Jul 2020
50 for Sibley - off 164 balls, across three sessions

Stokes goes down on his knees and swings at Chase but misses. Chase is not getting as much turn as he was at the beginning of the day, England can look to attack against him. Sibley moves to his 50, off 164 balls, with a push on the leg side. ENG 120/3 after 52

21:36 (IST)16 Jul 2020
Sibley on 49

A slow start to the session. But this is set to be a long session because of the rain delay, Stokes could punish West Indies if he can stay till the end of the day. A run out shout as Sibley gets a rare run off the bat against Chase. Two runs come off the bat in the next over from Roach. ENG 116/3 after 51

21:28 (IST)16 Jul 2020
Maiden overs to start off

Two maiden overs from Roach and Chase to start off proceedings after Tea. Apart from Stokes's six against the run of play towards the end of the 2nd session, there has been little attacking intent from the England batsmen. Summed up by the Boycott-esque innings played by Sibley. He is on 46 off 151 balls now. There have been two boundaries in that knock. First runs after the break come through a front foot no ball from Roach. ENG 113/3 after 49 overs

21:18 (IST)16 Jul 2020
Third session begins

Dom Sibley will now have batted across three sessions, as he waits outside the ground. The umpires are in the middle. It does not look like they are in too much concern about the light at the moment. The light meters are out. No probelms on that. Stokes and Sibley step in. Kemar Roach, still looking for his first wicket in the series, to bowl the first over of the third session.

21:03 (IST)16 Jul 2020
The low light issue

The umpires seen having a discussion with Holder as the players headed off. If a guess is to be made as to what that was about, it's probably about the low level of light. The floodlights have been on all through today, with dark clouds hanging over Manchester, but the umpires were seen checking their light meters towards the end of the second session. Fingers crossed that play will resume without hitch in the third session.

20:58 (IST)16 Jul 2020
Tea - ENG 112/3 after 46 overs

Brathwaite brought on for some spin as West Indies end the session with spin from both ends. This is also because of the low light in the ground at the moment. The umpires might have brought play to a close had the faster bowlers been operating. Brathwaite wavers in his line and Stokes cuts him for a single. Stokes lets loose in Chase's next over. Lofted over everybody's head and down the ground. First six of the match. England end the session on a positive note after having been stifled all through the session. 2 wickets and 83 runs in that long session.

20:51 (IST)16 Jul 2020
Chase almost makes an instant impact again

What a moment! Chase struck again, almost! Sibley would have had his heart in his mouth. Backward short leg gets hit by the shot almost but fails to hold on to the catch. Chase beats Sibley's outside edge again. Again, Chase's introduction has brought about panic in England's ranks. ENG 102/3 after 44 overs

20:48 (IST)16 Jul 2020
Chase brought back with minutes left before Tea

A test of patience for the batsmen as the West Indies bowlers continue maintaining a line slightly outisde off stump. Roston Chase brought back into the attack with minutes left before Tea. Can he make another instant impact like he had done just before Lunch? In more troubling developments, the umpires seem to be in doubt about the light. They are making checks on the light meter.

20:43 (IST)16 Jul 2020
ENG 100/3

A few shots of conviction from Stokes. All going straight to fielders though. In his 29 balls so far, Stokes has already showed more confidence than the entire England top order though. Roach brought back to bowl one final spell before the break. Sibley seems in no hurry to get to his 50, he is leaving the ball with aplomb. He gets England to 100/3 with a push for two as the 42nd over ends.

20:34 (IST)16 Jul 2020
England looking to hang in till Tea

Joseph continues to get get late movement when he bowls overpitched. Surely it's a matter of time before he draws an edge off Sibley. The batsmen are looking to hang in there till the Tea break more than anything now. One final half hour of play remaining in this session. England will be hoping Sibley and Stokes stay there till the end. Sibley moves into his 40s, having batted for almost two sessions already. Holder beats Stokes's bat narrowly to end the 39th over. ENG 96/3 after 40 overs

20:23 (IST)16 Jul 2020
Stokes vs Holder

Jason Holder vs Ben Stokes. What a contest this has been so far in the series. Two of the best seam-bowling all-rounders in the world facing off. Holder got Stokes twice in the 1st Test. Stokes got Holder once, with the WI skipper remaining not out in the second innings. They resume their battle-within-battle in Manchester. ENG 90/3

20:18 (IST)16 Jul 2020
Alzarri Joseph builds up pace

Sibley nicks one on the leg side as Holder bowls from the other end. Alzarri Joseph is asking all the right questions at the other end. Stokes gets his first runs since his first over faced with a crisp flick on the leg side, again for two runs. ENG 90/3 after 36 overs

20:10 (IST)16 Jul 2020
Root's Alzarri problem

Sibley plays out another maiden over, continuing to hold one end of this innings up. Ben Stokes gets off the mark scoring in twos. Meanwhile, Joseph seems to be a bit of a reputation as Root's nemesis. Root has been dismissed by Joseph in four of his last five Test innings against West Indies. ENG 85/3 after 34 overs

19:59 (IST)16 Jul 2020
Root falls, England lose their 3rd

Alzarri Joseph brought on into the attack from the opposite end after the drinks break signifying the halfway point of the afternoon session. Annd he gets the wicket of Root in the first over! Root edges as Alzarri bowls it full and gets swing. Holder latches on at slip. The skipper falls for 23. Sibley is joined by Stokes at 5. Alzarri Joseph has brought about the breakthrough. The first wicket for pace. ENG 81/3 after 31.2

19:50 (IST)16 Jul 2020
Gabriel leaves the field

Sibley takes one at his body. This has been a determined knock from him. He has seemed to decide that he will take a few on the body but not give his wicket away with a poke at a short ball. Gabriel is attacking him with short balls, has worked up a good pace in this spell. Gabriel ends with a full delivery and is driven for two by Sibley. And Gabriel is going off the field to receive some treatment. He has bowled 7 overs for 17. Not a good sight for the West Indies to see him walking off. ENG 74/2 after 30 overs

19:40 (IST)16 Jul 2020
Sibley hits first 4 in 91 balls

Holder and Gabriel, the two most successful bowlers in the 1st Test, bowling for the West Indies now, with three slips and a gully in place. Sibley cuts a short one four four. Flashed hard over the field. That is his first boundary, it has taken him 91 balls to hit his first four. Shows what kind of pressure the England batting order has been under today. They are just beginning to dig themselves in now though. ENG 68/2 after 28 overs

The ECB did not specify the nature of Jofra Archer's breach but said the West Indies team were satisfied with the measures taken. “I am extremely sorry for what I have done,” said Archer, who was part of the team that lost the series opener. “I have put, not only myself, but the whole team and management in danger. I fully accept the consequences of my actions, and I want to sincerely apologise to everyone in the bio-secure bubble. “It deeply pains me to be missing the test match, especially with the series poised. I feel like I have let both teams down, and again I am sorry.”
