Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan said that India's medical professionals, health workers and scientists have played an important role in dealing with COVID-19 and they are helping in drug discovery and use of existing medicines in relation to the disease.

Harsh Vardhan told his Australian counterpart Gregory Andrew Hunt on Tuesday, during a discussion on bilateral health cooperation, that medical professionals played an important role since the onset of the disease and the study of genome sequences in relation to the virus was initiated.

"In January, there was only a laboratory to test the virus," he said. Now the country has more than 1,200 laboratories for extensive testing. ”The Health Ministry quoted Harsh Vardhan as saying that India was able to supply hydroxychloroquine to 140 countries thanks to India's pharmaceutical manufacturers.

The ministry said that Harsh Vardhan spoke to Hunt on a memorandum of understanding signed between India and Australia on 10 April 2017 for cooperation in the field of health and medicine. The statement said the health ministers of the two countries agreed to continue working together in areas of health and other common interests.
