CHENNAI: The decision of the AIADMK government in Tamil Nadu to set aside 7.5% of medical seats for students from government schools is a move with an eye on the next assembly elections, AMMK general secretary T T V Dhinakaran said on Wednesday. Instead, the state government should aim at finding a permanent solution by getting the much awaited exemption from NEET for Tamil Nadu.
"This is a government that had hidden for two years the fact that the Tamil Nadu assembly resolution seeking exemption from NEET was rejected by the Centre. It needed a court intervention for the government to reveal the truth," Dhinakaran said.
"While the failure of the government forced NEET on students of Tamil Nadu, coaching centres minted money by offering NEET coaching to students. After the state government's attempt to offer coaching, done without proper planning, failed, the students too lost interest and have almost given up writing the NEET entrance exams,” he said.
"When even those who write are not scoring high marks and hence not getting admission, how will this move to sub-allot 7.5% seats to students from government schools help anyone," Dhinakaran asked.
Finding a permanent solution, through proper legislative intervention, is the only way forward, according to him.
