A 26-year-old man has been arrested after allegedly grooming who he believed was a 14-year-old girl and arranging to meet for sex.

Detectives swooped on the man from Taree, on the New South Wales mid-north coast, and arrested him on Wednesday.

Police found a makeshift bed in the back of the man's car, including a mattress, pillows and a palm tree print doona.

In May, detectives from the Child Abuse and Sex Crime Squad's Child Exploitation Internet Unit (CEIU) began engaging online with the man.

He believed he was speaking with a 14-year-old girl at the time, police allege.

He is also accused of engaging in conversations about sexually explicit acts he wished to perform and sent explicit material.

It will be further alleged that the man then arranged to meet the child, who was in fact a detective, in person.

Following extensive inquiries, strike force investigators arrested the suspect at Forster at about 10.50am on Wednesday.

He was taken to Forster Police Station and charged with two counts of use carriage service to solicit child abuse material, possess/control child abuse material using carriage service and use carriage service to procure child under 16 years for sex.

He was refused bail to appear at Forster Local Court on Wednesday.
