Covid-19: Recoveries 1.8 times of active cases now

NEW DELHI: As more and more Covid patients get better, the Centre said on Tuesday that the gap between active and recovered cases of Covid-19 is increasing progressively across the country. It said most of the infection spread is limited to a few states, indicating effective containment measures have been implemented to control the pandemic.
Recoveries now account for 1.8 times the active cases, meaning people who are getting discharged from hospitals are much more than the new cases getting admitted.
The health ministry also presented data to show a sharp decline in daily growth rate of new cases in last three and a half months, even as 28,498 new cases were added on a single day on Monday pushing the total tally past 9 lakh confirmed Covid-19 cases.
“If you look, the daily growth rate in March was around 31%, it reduced to 9% in May and around 5 % by the end of May and if you look at the figures as on July 12, it has come down to 3.24%. There has been a progressive decline in the daily growth rate of new cases,” says Rajesh Bhushan, officer on special duty in the health ministry.
Officials say this is a positive indicator showing not just an effective clinical management strategy against Covid-19 even when the infection will continue to spread but also because lesser number of active cases would probably mean a slower rate of transmission as the infection has a multiplying effect with one case potentially infecting many others.
Bhushan also highlighted that majority of the cases — 86% of total active cases — are from 10 affected states, whereas 50% are from two most affected states — Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu, indicating most of the disease burden is has a limited geographical spread.
The ministry also highlighted that the overall recovery rate has improved from 26.59% om May 3 to 63.02% at present. Besides, 20 states and UTs have a recovery rate higher than the national average.
