PMC asks lab to stop COVID tests

Move comes after complaint from a Sinhagad Road resident

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has asked a lab associated with Thyrocare to stop conducting tests for coronavirus disease (COVID-19), citing confusing results. A notice has been served to Janakalyan Diagnostic Centre, which was conducting tests, asking them for an explanation after a complaint was lodged by a Sinhagad Road resident whose son tested positive.

Lab representatives have, however, stated that they have not received the notice but citizens are confusing results with asymptomatic and symptomatic ones. This comes after a similar move by the district administration against Thyrocare.

The issue started after the 6-yearold son of a resident of Sinhagad Road tested positive for COVID-19 on July 5. He had given a swab for testing at Janakalyan Diagnostic Centre, associated with Thyrocare. After the son tested positive, as a part of contact tracing, samples from other members of the household were sent for testing.

All 19 members of the family excluding the boy, who were tested in National Institute of Virology (NIV) and a private hospital, tested negative. Thus, claiming that the boy’s result was suspicious, the resident then lodged a complaint with PMC.

Speaking to Mirror, the resident said, “My son had cold and cough so I visited a private doctor. While checking, the doctor checked his oxygen level which turned out to be low. So the doctor suggested that we should get a COVID-19 test done. I got him tested from this centre associated with Thyrocare and the report came out to be positive. But none of our family members have tested positive except for my son. We stay in a joint family and my son has not gone anywhere to come in contact with anyone else to get infected. Hence, I decided to lodge a complaint about the reports, which were clearly suspicious.”

Taking a note of the complaint, PMC authorities have issued a showcause notice to the lab. The notice states that suspicion has already been raised about reports from Thyrocare after which the district collector also issued notices, asking them to stop the testing in Haveli taluka. Since a similar case has come to fore, they should immediately stop testing and submit an explanation.

Ramchandra Hankare, head of PMC’s health department, said, “We have received complaint that contradictory reports have been obtained from labs in NIV and Thyrocare. This is an issue of serious concern and the lab can be blacklisted for this. We have asked them to furnish an explanation by issuing a show-cause notice. Testing in this lab will have to stop till further orders.”

Dr Satish Jagtap, administrator, Janakalyan Diagnostic Centre, said, “People are not following norms. Majority of the people are asymptomatic. The asymptomatic people are confusing the reports by saying that why have they testing positive without symptom. We started testing for COVID-19 as a charitable trust. We are collecting swabs and send them to Thryocare and Krsna Diagnostics for testing. I have not received any notice till date. We will discuss the matter with the PMC officials.”
