Representative imageKANPUR: Already drawing flak over allegations of its men being hand in glove with slain ganglord Vikas Dubey, Kanpur police landed in a soup once again when family members of a kidnapped youth alleged on camera that police made them pay a ransom of Rs 30 lakh to the kidnappers but failed to rescue the captive.
Chaman Singh of Barra area said that the ransom was paid from the amount that he had saved for the marriage of his daughter after selling his house. Police had asked the family to pay the ransom and planned to catch the kidnappers when they came to collect it. The kidnappers however managed to collect the bag full of cash and escape as the cops looked on, he says. The alleged abduction took place on June 22. The video of the victim’s family crying before the media and pleading senior police officials for help went viral on Tuesday.
Chaman Singh said his son Sandeep, employed at a local pathology lab, was kidnapped on June 22. The kidnappers called up the family and demanded Rs 30 lakh. Subsequently, Singhlodged a complaint following which an FIR was registered at the Barra police station.
The family managed to arrange the ransom and as asked by cops, handed it over to one of the miscreants at Gujaini railway track on Monday after the police assured that Sandeep would be freed unharmed. “However, cops are clueless about the whereabouts of the kidnappers and victim,” Singh said.
