NEW DELHI: The Delhi government schools continue to improve their performance in the CBSE final examinations, with the pass percentage touching 97.68% for Delhi-East region and 97.91% for Delhi-West. This is an increase from 94.24% last year, when there was no regional division.
Chief minister Arvind Kejriwal called the results of the government schools “historic”, while education minister Manish Sisodia said, “Over the past five years, we at Delhi government schools have been competing with ourselves to break our own record each time. This year is no exception.”
Among the government schools across the country, Delhi is only behind Bengaluru and Thiruvananthapuram. In Bengaluru, the government schools’ pass percentage is 98.94%, while in Thiruvananthapuram, it stands at 98.41%, a fall from last year’s 100%.
In Delhi, the government schools have finished behind the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya and Kendriya Vidyalayas, both central government-backed institutions, but are ahead of the private schools in the two regions. The average pass percentage of private schools in Delhi-East is 91.69%, an increase from last year’s 90.68%. In Delhi-West, the average is 92.12%.
Congratulating all stakeholders, Kejriwal tweeted, “Feeling proud to announce that the CBSE Class XII result of Delhi government schools this year is 98%, highest ever so far. It’s historic. Congratulations to my team education, all students, teachers, parents and education officers. Proud of you all.”
Deputy CM Sisodia shared a graphic on the performance improvement from 2016, when AAP came to power. The pass percentage in 2016 was 85.9%.
AAP legislator Atishi, who has been working in the government on education-related matters, tweeted, “A 98% result! What an achievement by the students of Delhi govt schools! The steady improvement in the Class XII results with every passing year reflects that a govt committed to public education can transform the lives of students.” The AAP government has constantly given the education sector the highest share in its annual budget.
The principals of several government schools said their performance had improved considerably. “This year, the number of students scoring 90% in my school has increased. The overall results have also been very good,” said the principal of a school in east Delhi.
The overall pass percentage is 94.4% in Delhi, where 2,37,901 students appeared for the exam, the highest among all 16 CBSE regions. Like the national trend, girls have performed better than boys in Delhi too. The pass percentage of girls stand at 96.43% against boys’ 92.48%.
