Representative imageHISAR: The Hansi police booked three cops deployed with a police control room (PCR) vehicle for murder two days after they allegedly crushed a Dalit to death.
The family of the victim — Ravinder of Gagankheri village in Hisar — and others staged a protest after CCTV camera footage of the July 11 incident went viral on Sunday. It was only after the protest that the police registered a murder case against the three cops.
No arrests have been made in the case so far. “In this case, orders have been given to add Section 302 (murder) of the IPC and the Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. Further action will be taken after investigation of the case,” said a police official from Hansi.
On complaint of the victim’s father Ram Mehar, the Hansi City police station had first registered a case under Sections 279 (rash driving or riding on a public way) and 304-A (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code against the driver of the PCR vehicle. But as the CCTV video of the incident surfaced, the family lodged a protest.
In his complaint to the police, Ram said his son was returning to the village on a motorcycle after closing his shop at Umra Gate in Hansi. He alleged initially he believed the account given to him by the cops that Ravinder’s motorcycle hit an electricity pole during a chase by the PCR vehicle. “However, the CCTV camera footage from the spot clearly showed that the PCR vehicle crushed my son due to which he was fatally injured,” he alleged.
“Ravinder suffered major head injuries and was admitted to the Hansi general hospital for treatment. He was referred to Hisar for treatment where doctors declared him dead,” he said.
