Giant Callan Ward sidelined with knee soreness

Former GWS Giants co-captain Callan Ward has suffered a blow in his comeback season after having an ACL reconstruction and will be sidelined for up to six weeks.

Ward, 30, played out the game in Sunday's loss to Port Adelaide but the Giants confirmed on Tuesday that the courageous and durable utility reported soreness in his right knee post-match.

The Giants veteran has played four matches in 2020 after suffering a season-ending knee injury in round four last year. The current injury is not to his recently reconstructed knee.

GWS estimated that the 221-game AFL player would be out of action for between four to six weeks.

"We're really disappointed for Wardy," GWS head of medical Cullan Ball told the club's website.

"He kicked around his body and had that kick smothered.

"He did some damage to his lateral collateral ligament in his right knee, so that's not the one he had reconstructed last year which we’re thankful about."
