HEIGHT OF COVID: 170 NEW CASES IN STATE

The state on Tuesday witnessed the biggest-ever single-day spike of 170 positive cases of dreaded COVID-19, taking the total tally of the active cases to 1,128 in the state.

The previous single-day jump was witnessed on July 8 when the state saw 136 COVID cases.  

Around 67 patients were declared ‘cured’ in the last 24 hours by the directorate of health services.

Till date, the state has witnessed 2753 confirmed cases; of which a total of 1,607 people have recovered from the disease, which has claimed 18 lives in Goa.

As many as 56 new cases are from the Verna-based Tulip Diagnostic Private Limited Company; till date this firm has reported a total of 136 cases.

The new cases also include nine from New Vaddem, Vasco, and also nine cases linked to the Mangor Hill outbreak of the disease.

As per the media bulletin issued by the DHS, eight cases have been reported in Karaswada, seven in Pernem, five at Ponda and four at Sankhali.

The fresh cases detected also include three each at Margao and Marcaim, while two cases have been reported at Usgao.

The new cases also include one each from Mangor Hill, Curtorim, Quepem, Curca, Neura, Khandola and Caranzalem.

The DHS bulletin said the 1,128 active cases include 126 persons, who travelled to Goa from outside by road, rail and air; 77 residents of Mangor Hill, while 306 cases are linked to the containment zone of Mangor Hill.

The major locations from where cases are surfacing include Zuarinagar (146), Kharewada (54), New Vaddem (92), Tulip Diagnostic (136), Baina (112), Chimbel (73), Headland Sada (91), Curtorim (32), Balli (42) and Morlem (22).

News reports said the Centre has asserted that 22 states in India are testing more than 140 people per day per million for the coronavirus COVID-19, thus exceeding the criteria set by the World Health Organisation. Of these states, Goa has the maximum number of 1058 tests per million and Delhi does 978 tests per million.

The Union ministry of health said, “22 states are currently performing more than 140 tests per day per million population or those states carrying out comprehensive testing in accordance with the guidance note issued by WHO in the context of COVID19.”
