The Academic Council of the Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education on Tuesday decided to follow the modalities adopted by the Central Board of Secondary Education for curtailing the syllabus of subjects namely physics, chemistry, biology and mathematics for Classes from IX to XII.

This reduction in syllabus will be one-time measure for the academic year 2020-21, owing to the coronavirus pandemic, and no question will be asked from the reduced syllabus at the exams.

The CBSE, which announced reduction in its syllabus last week, had stated that this reduction would be in terms of retaining the core concepts from the syllabus.

“We have taken this decision since the Goa Board students, many of whom also appear for the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) just like the CBSE students, would be largely benefited,” stated Goa Board secretary Bhagirath Shetye.

Speaking to ‘The Navhind Times’, he said that remaining subjects of the Classes from IX to XII such as languages including English and Hindi, accountancy and so on would also have their syllabus curtailed.

“The academic council agreed to shorten the syllabus of these subjects by 28 per cent to 30 per cent,” he added, pointing out, “As the online teaching for Classes from IX to XII has already started, we will not do away with the part of the syllabus at the beginning of textbooks, but towards the end.”

Shetye further said the syllabus of the pre-vocational courses would however not be curtailed, as this syllabus is already limited in content.

“The Goa Board is now in the process of informing the government about the curtailment of syllabus for these four classes,” he stated, informing that the related notification would be issued in a week’s time, once the consent of the government is received by the Goa Board.
