In recent months there have been a number of indications that automakers and suppliers are shifting their focus away from fully autonomous driving, the so-called Level 4 and Level 5 solutions that completely take control of a vehicle.
One reason for the shift is that many companies can no longer justify the massive cost of these advanced solutions when they need to preserve cash to survive the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
Therefore, many auto companies are increasing investments in higher level driver assistance systems, including Level 3 autonomy that takes over the driving temporarily, such as during a highway commute.
