PUNE: Velhe tehsil, which had registered the
first Covid-19 case in the rural areas of Pune district in March, has managed to contain the spread of the contagion in the last three weeks.
The tehsil has recorded only five positive cases in the last three weeks. Of them, three have recovered and the remaining two are still active.
"The village-level vigilance committees have been playing a vital role in the 70 gram panchayats of the tehsil. The committees, with the help of Asha workers and health staff, conduct weekly primary health check-ups of people who travel to Pune city daily. We could trace the five patients in time because of this," Vishal Shinde, the block development officer of the tehsil, said.
Regular travellers coming from the city limits are not allowed to mingle with residents of the villages.
"They have been told to stay isolated in their homes. The villages have provided accommodation for those who don't have adequate space in their homes, at gram panchayat and ZP schools," Shinde said.
The tehsil has recorded 38 total patients since the outbreak. Of these, one succumbed to the virus, 35 have been discharged after recovery and two are active cases. "The condition of both the patients is stable and they will be discharged in the coming days," Shinde added.
The tehsil administration has closed all tourist places including forts till further notice as a precautionary measure.
