Resource worry for police in Burrabazar as cases rise

KOLKATA: Spike in Covid-19 cases, non-compliance of safety guidelines and the need for constant supervision of crowded markets in the wholesale hub of Burrabazar has stretched the cops for their resources. Burrabazar not only has the highest number of wholesale and retail markets along with high footfalls everyday, it has also registered one of the highest number of Covid-19 cases (250 estimated) till now.
With sealing areas where cases are being detected, regulating traffic, facilitating social distancing and maintaining law and order, every day at the Burrabazar police station — that does not have more than 95 personnel — is extremely busy.
“We have big markets like Bagri Market, Mehta Building, Ganesh Market and Nandaram Market under our jurisdiction. We hold regular meetings with the associations and provide support to seal off an area if any trader tests positive. Along with that we also ensure that pavements and carriageways are not clogged so that social distancing can be maintained,” said an officer.
A few officers tested positive in the past. All of them recovered and resumed duty.
