BATHINDA: With cotton picking season nearing the end, data collected by Indian Cotton Association Limited (ICAL) showed the arrival of nearly 67 lakh bales in mandis of Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan.
Last year, 61.68 lakh bales arrived by June 30. In the ongoing season, 5.30 lakh more bales (1 bale=170 kilogram) arrived due to increase in area under cotton in 2019-20 as compared to 2018-19. In the 2018-19 season, cotton was sown in 14.45 lakh hectares in three states. In 2019-20, it was sown in 18.28 lakh hectares with increase in area of 3.28 lakh hectares.
According to ICAL data, 9.53 lakh bales arrived in mandis of Punjab till June 30, 24.26 lakh bales arrived in Haryana whereas 33.11 lakh bales arrived in Rajasthan. Total crop arrival stood at 66.90 lakh bales. The total estimate is of 67.40 lakh bales as nearly 50,000 more bales are expected in the days to come. Nearly 350 lakh bales are expected in the country.
Cotton was sown over 3.92 lakh hectares in Punjab in 2019-20. In Haryana, it was grown over 6.76 lakh hectares and in Rajasthan, it was sown over 7.60 lakh hectares. Initially, the estimated arrival was pegged at 66 lakh bales but when actual area under cotton crop was measured, the estimate was revised to 67.5 lakh bales.
Arrival in Punjab has been lesser than Haryana and Rajasthan. Sources said there seems to be some discrepancy in area under the crop as measured by the state agriculture department and actual area under the crop. Besides, sources said some of the crop from Punjab went to mandis of Haryana and Rajasthan. Initially, prices were being quoted at Rs 4,500 to Rs 4,600 per quintal in Punjab against minimum support price of Rs 5,350 for long staple measuring 27.5-28.5MM. Prices stabilised near Rs 5,000 per quintal when Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) entered the markets this season after a gap of four years. ICAL president Mahesh Sharda said with increase in area under the crop, production increased by over 5 lakh bales in 2019-20 as compared to the previous season.
