GAYA: District magistrate (DM) Abhishek Singh issued an order on Friday evening regarding the implementation of partial lockdown in Gaya from Sunday. Apart from the seven police stations located in the Gaya Municipal Corporation area, the curbs will also be imposed in the Nagar Panchayat areas of Bodh Gaya, Sherghati and Tekari.
According to the DM’s notification, Tekari Road, Purani Godam Road, A N Road, Ramna Road, Swarajpuri Road, Dighi Road, Gewalbigha-Shahmir Takiya Road, Mangla Gauri-Chand Chauraha Road, Nawagarhi-Maranpur Road, Six-lane bridge-Abgila Road and Buniadganj-Patwatoli-Manpur Road among others will be placed under partial lockdown and declared non-vending zones.
As per the order, not more than 50% of the non-essential shops will remain open on the six working days. Instead of odd-even formula, shops on the left side of the notified roads will remain open on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays while those on the right side will be open on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. On Sundays, all shops, except for those selling eatables, medicines, construction materials and agricultural tools, will be shut. Night curfew will remain in force from 10pm to 5am every day.
However, all non-essential shops in the two containment zones of the town — G B Road and Dak Bungalow Road — will remain closed for four weeks. Educational institutions, including coaching centres, will also be shut.
Talking about the partial lockdown, the DM told this newspaper on Saturday, “The fight against Covid-19 is a long-drawn battle. However, a complete lockdown for a long period is not practical and for a short period, it may not serve the purpose.”
Although Singh did not specify the duration of the partial lockdown, he hinted at its continuation for the next few months. “This is a medium-term strategy. Continuation of the curbs depends on the local dynamics of the pandemic,” he said and added that the stakeholders were taken into confidence before finalizing the partial lockdown.
Welcoming the DM’s decision, Central Bihar Chamber of Commerce president Sanjay Bharadwaj said, “It was necessary to limit the number of people in the business hubs of the town.”
