Several parts of the State recorded the highest amount of rainfall so far this season, said experts at the Regional Metrological Department. The showers are expected to continue for a week across the State, with districts like Pudukottai, Salem and Vellore expecting good rains.

Chennai: “Till date, we have recorded the highest amount of rainfall for this season. These rains are due to the interactions between the easterly trough and westerly trough over the State. We can expect these conditions to continue for the next four-five days,” said S Balachandran, Director, Regional Metrological Department, Chennai.
Over the past 24 hours, until Friday evening, Yercaud received 20 cm of rainfall, Keeranur and Arakonam saw 13 cm of rainfall. Chennai and Pudukottai saw 11 cm of rainfall. According to RMC data, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Vellore, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Dindigul, Madurai, Coimbatore, The Nilgiris, Salem, Namakkal, Theni and Pudukottai are expected to see heavy rainfall, while the rest of the State will have moderate showers.
In Chennai, Meenambakkam recorded 115.4 mm of rainfall on Friday, while Nungambakkam recorded 10.6 mm. The maximum temperature was 36.2 degrees Celsius in Meenambakkam and 35.1 degrees Celsius in Nungambakkam, while the minimum was 23 degrees Celsius and 24.5 degrees Celsius respectively.
Calling it a ‘historic day’, Pradeep John, who runs the page Tamil Nadu Weatherman, said, “Rains from Kerala breached into Pollachi belt too. That was a surprise. Rains are spreading to other parts of the city which missed the spells, but we can’t expect the same numbers as that in the districts.”
