The death toll now stands at 10,116. Besides this, the overall count also bypassed all previous records with 8,139 new cases yesterday. The state recorded 71,836 cases in only 11 days of July.
A 57-year-old Assistant Municipal Commissioner of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) succumbed to Covid-19 on Saturday evening. Ashok Khairnar was handling H-east ward (Bandra east), one of the worst-hit Covid-19 hotspots which also has the residence of Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray.
Meanwhile, the Home department has directed Ganesh Mandals not to organise immersion processions to beaches and lakes this year and urged citizens to immerse idols at home in the wake of the pandemic. As per the directives for the 11-day festival, Mandals have to restrict the height of Ganpati idols to four feet, while idols worshipped at homes should not be more than two-foot high.
Actor Esha Deol on Sunday rubbished rumours that her mother, veteran star Hema Malini was admitted to a hospital. There were reports that the 71-year-old actor was rushed to a hospital due to poor health. Taking to Twitter, Esha asked people not to react to misinformation. "My mother @dreamgirlhema is fit & fine! The news regarding her health is absolutely fake so please don't react to such rumours!" she tweeted. "Thanks to everyone for their love and concern," the actor-author added.
Mumbai’s Raj Bhavan campus that is home to Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari is the latest to turn into a mini Covid-19 hotspot. On Saturday, at least 14 people who stay and work inside the campus tested positive for coronavirus. Two others had tested positive earlier this week. The Mumbai municipality was yet to declare Raj Bhavan as a containment zone. A senior official with Raj Bhavan confirmed that the campus will remain out of bounds to outsiders and that no meeting will take place inside the premises for the next fortnight or so.
Mumbai Police have beefed up security outside the Nanavati Hospital, where megastar Amitabh Bachchan and his son Abhishek Bachahan have been admitted after they tested positive for coronavirus, officials said on Sunday. Security has also been stepped up outside the megastar's two bungalows in Juhu area, they said. "We have beefed up security to avoid assembling of people outside the hospital. Other Covid-19 patients are also in the hospital, they should not face inconvenience. Our officers are outside the hospital and not allowing anyone to assemble," Santacruz police station's senior inspector Shriram Koregaonkar said. Additional security has also been deployed outside the actor's bungalows where people may assemble, an official from Juhu police station said.

Bollywood actor Anupam Kher today took to Twitter to share that his mother Dulari, brother Raju, sister-in-law Rima and niece Vrinda have tested positive for coronavirus. In a video, Anupam said that while he has tested negative for the disease, a few of his family members were not as fortunate. The actor’s mother, brother, sister-in-law and niece have contracted coronavirus. He added that all of them are stable and have been found ‘mildly Covid positive.’ While Anupam Kher’s mother has been admitted to Kokilaben Hospital in Mumbai, the rest of the family are quarantining at their home.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has sealed actor Rekha's bungalow in suburban Bandra after a security guard there tested coronavirus positive, a civic official said on Sunday. The guard at the 65-year-old 'Umrao Jaan' actor's bungalow 'Sea Springs' tested positive on Tuesday, the official said. The BMC has put a board outside the premises declaring the place as a containment area. The security guard has been hospitalised at the BMC's COVID-19 care facility in Bandra Kurla Complex, he said. As the bungalow is a standalone one, only a portion of it has been sealed, he said.

A list of guidelines for the 11-day festival, slated to be held from August 22 this year, was issued Saturday. As per the directives, Mandals have to restrict the height of Ganpati idols to four feet, while idols worshipped at homes should not be more than two-foot high. Earlier, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray had met representatives from Ganesh Mandals and asked them to limit the size of the idols. The guidelines, issued by Principal Secretary (Home), Amitabh Gupta, also urged citizens to immerse idols at home and avoid travelling to crowded waterfronts. It also states that citizens should consider deferring the immersion to next year’s festival. “By avoiding going to crowded spaces while welcoming and immersing idols, you will protect yourselves and your family members from the risk of contracting Covid-19,” the guidelines read. Citizens have also been asked to use idols made of environmentally-friendly materials.
After actors Amitabh and Abhishek Bachchan shared that they have coronavirus, rumour mills were abuzz that Neetu Kapoor and son Ranbir Kapoor have tested positive for Covid-19. According to the rumours which Riddhima Kapoor Sahni debunked, Amitabh and his grandson Agastya Nanda had attended a birthday party hosted by Riddhima. Saying that there is no truth to such reports, Ranbir’s sister Riddhima took to her Instagram page and wrote, “Attention seeking ??? Least verify/ clarify ! We are fit. We are good ! Stop spreading rumours ! #lunatics.”
Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan and his son, actor Abhishek Bachchan, announced in separate tweets on Saturday that they have tested positive for Covid-19 and have been admitted to a hospital in Mumbai with “mild symptoms”. Both of them are undergoing treatment at Nanavati Hospital, with an official confirming that they had “facilitated their tests” and that the two are “stable”. Maharashtra Health Minister Rajesh Tope said all their other family members have tested negative in rapid antigen tests. The results of the RT-PCR tests are awaited, he said.
On Saturday, Mumbai recorded 1,284 fresh cases, touching 91,745. The city, once a hotspot accounting for the largest share of Covid-19 cases in the state, is gradually reducing its share in the total count. In a month, its contribution has more than halved. The city also accounted for 17 per cent (39) of 223 deaths in the state. Until a month ago, Mumbai accounted for 63 per cent of the daily toll. Similarly, for fresh cases, the city accounted for 15.7 per cent of the state’s count, while a month ago it accounted for 39.3 per cent of the daily addition of new cases. The toll in Mumbai reached 5,244.
