Bike racing menace: All flyovers in Chennai to be closed after 8pm

CHENNAI: The Chennai police have decided to close all the flyovers in the city after 8pm to prevent bike racing by youngsters.
The measure was taken after 15 youngsters raced their motorcycles on the Murasoli Maran flyover at Perambur in the early hours of Friday.
The city police control room received a distress call from one of the residents who witnessed the incident. The cops reached the spot and blocked the flyover. The Sembium police were searching for the suspects with the help of the CCTV footage.
The police stated most of the bikers resort to speeding either early in the morning or late at night.
The crime and law and order wing has been providing support to the traffic police in monitoring road safety by getting a hold on those who violate the lockdown rules.
Police said many bike racers preferred speeding on the Sardar Patel Road, Beach Road and Anna Salai in March. According to the police, the bikers now seem to prefer select roads in north Chennai due to the lower number of police checkpoints.
The police also stated that the bikers also race on the Outer Ring Road and Ennore Express Highway. Early this year, a racer, who is also an autorickshaw mechanic, died while racing on the Outer Ring Road.
