This is 10th consecutive day of a new peak and the second of 800+ cases of Covid-19; total count of cases reaches 40,155; July tally of 7,512 cases equivalent to first 51days of Covid in Gujarat; 269 cases in Surat; 165 in Ahmedabad

Friday was the tenth consecutive day of a fresh peak of Covid-19 cases in Gujarat. The State reported 875 cases in 24 hours, surpassing the previous day’s count of 868. The addition of new cases has pushed the State’s tally so far beyond 40,000 cases, with the count reaching 40,155 on Friday. Also, in 10 days of July, Gujarat got 7,512 new cases, which is equivalent to the first 51 days of Covid-19 (there were 7,403 cases on May 8). A total of 14 patients succumbed to the infection, taking the death toll to 2,024.

Gujarat crossed the 30,000-mark on June 26. Thus, it took 15 days for the state to breach the mark of 40,000 after crossing the mark of 30,000 on June 26 (9,997 cases). The previous jump of 10,000 cases had happened in 20 days when a total of 10,061cases were reported from June 7 to June 26.

On Friday, Surat saw a drop in the number of cases, though it remained at the top place. As many as 269 tested positive in the district, of which 202 were in the city and 67 in rural areas. Ahmedabad got 165 new cases, 153 from the city and 12 from rural areas.

The district’s tally of cases has now reached 22,745. Other districts where significant number of cases were reported in the last 24 hours are Bhavnagar (71), Vadodara (69) and Rajkot (39). Of the 14 deaths in 24 hours, five were reported in Ahmedabad district, four in Surat and one each in Arvalli, Gandhinagar, Jamnagar, Junagadh and Mehsana.

Maximum active cases in 3 zones of West A’bad

Ahmedabad city had reported 3,139 active cases till Friday morning. Of these, the highest, 590, are in west zone, followed by 491in north-west zone, 468 in south-west, 462 in north, 459 in east zone, 428 in south zone and 241in central zone. Thus, all three zones in the western part of the city, once considered safer, occupy the top positions among zones for active Covid-19 cases in the descending order.


Antigen testing on A’bad-Surat expressway

Looking at the rapid rise in Covid-19 cases in Surat, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation started rapid antigen testing of people coming from Surat to Ahmedabad via the expressway. The initiative, launched on Friday, is aimed at preventing spread of the infection from people who have been to Surat. AMC had deployed three teams in the morning near the toll plaza near CTM crossroads. Later on, teams will be deployed depending on the requirement.

However, at least one team is likely to be present at any given time. According to sources, earlier there was just one team at the spot. However, with nine out of the first 100 persons tested positive, two more teams were promptly sent to the spot to supplement the testing process. AMC also carried out antigen testing at the New Cloth Market.



17 new micro-containment areas in city

AMC identified 17 more spots in the city as micro-containment areas. Maximum, 5, are in the east zone. Northwest zone has 3 while west, south-west, south and north have two each. One containment zone is in central zone. These areas cover 506 houses with 2,105 residents. Alongside, one micro-containment area in Bapunagar in north zone was removed from the list.
