Representative ImageCHENNAI: A 59-year-old grocery store owner allegedly committed suicide at his shop in Chengalpet on Wednesday after suffering loss in business, police said. The deceased was identified as Rajasekaran from Swaminathan Street in Guduvancherry.
Police said he owned a provision store near the Guduvancherry bus stand. Since the lockdown began in March his shop was shut and he suffered financial loss. Though he opened his shop last month, Rajasekaran could not borrow money, as he already had debts outstanding and running out of money to purchase new goods.
“Usually, he had good business as his shop was located near the bus stop. But with no bus services, there was no public movement either,” said an investigating officer.
He kept telling his friends and his family members that he already ended up in a major loss and would not be able to bear more. On Wednesday morning, The Guduvancherry police registered a case and further investigations are on.
