MUMBAI: BEST's fleet on road has risen by 45% or 1,000 more buses in just a month, and its daily earnings has crossed Rs 90 lakh on Thursday. The BEST now ferries over a million passengers daily.
While the fleet of 2,200 buses had ferried 2.5 lakh commuters on June 8, when the offices and shops had reopened after lockdown in Mumbai, it has now got a fleet of 3,200 buses on roads which is 91% of the total fleet in the undertaking.
The BEST is rapidly moving towards increasing its commuter strength which is likely to touch 15 lakh by month end, sources in the undertaking said. The daily earnings will also go beyond a crore very soon, they stated.
On Thursday the BEST began selling bus passes at 29 outlets across the city. "We have also opened these counters for pass renewals and also for giving extension to those who were unable to use the pass during lockdown,'' said BEST spokesperson Manoj Varade. The figures of bus passes being sold on Day 1 were not available.
Officials said there was huge demand for red buses, which plan to cover as many as 500 routes across the city to help the Mission Begin Again campaign of the state government. The commuters have increased despite BEST curtailing most services to ferry essential staff and discontinuing special services for far-flung suburbs such as Vasai-Virar, Badlapur-Kalyan and Panvel.
A senior official said that the social distancing norm was now being strictly observed and passengers can complain or write to BEST undertaking if there were any violations. One can write to BEST headquarters citing route number, time and date of travel in bus to probestundertaking@gmail.com.
A BEST bus can allow only 25 persons to sit while there can be five standees.
