Vikas Dubey was a relatively unknown name in Uttar Pradesh and its underworld till Friday, July 3. As the sun dawned on Friday, Dubey had become the most dreaded name in the country. The incident, first of its kind in Uttar Pradesh, led to nationwide outrage and cast aspersions on the Yogi Adityanath government and the state police force.

Media persons, who were following the convoy bringing back gangster Vikas Dubey, were stopped by police in Sachendi area of Kanpur before the encounter around 6.30 am, reports ANI.

Eight days after the Bikru village bloodbath in which eight policemen were killed, gangster Vikas Dubey, was shot dead in an early Friday morning encounter by the STF and police, which claimed the unarmed man had somehow managed to snatch a gun from one of their armed escort team members.

According to police, Dubey had attempted to flee by snatching pistol of the injured policemen after the car overturned.

The police fired in self-defence, during which Vikas Dubey got injured and was immediately treated. He died during treatment: Kanpur police

The officer confirmed that Dubey "sustained injuries" but did not confirm to what extent, saying it would come in the postmortem report, reports PTI.
