The Maharashtra government announced extension of the general lockdown until July 31 with an aim to contain the Covid-19 surge. The notification issued by the state government has also restricted inter-district travel between municipal corporations within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) to that for office purposes and essential activities like medical reasons.

BMC denies incentives to jr docs in quarantine
In another instance of insensitivity towards Covid frontline workers, the BMC has this month deducted the Rs 300 per day incentive to resident doctors for the days they were in quarantine — part of their Covid duty.

The medical superintendent of the Thane Municipal Corporation-run Global Hub Hospital has been shunted out and four nurses have been fired from their jobs in the wake of the body mix-up controversy. Admitting an administrative lapse, TMC commissioner Vipin Sharma on Thursday also issued an apology.

Ten of the 27 Covid-19 hotspots identified in North Mumbai reported less than one positive case a day after a complete lockdown was enforced by the police in the past 20 days and high risk contacts of patients were isolated by the BMC. Two of the most thickly populated slums in the western suburbs—Bhagat Singh Nagar at Goregaon and Ganpat Patil Nagar at Borivli—are among the success stories.
