Gurgaon: To rein in speedsters and keep an eye on crimes, the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has decided to install hi-tech speed detector cameras on KMP Expressway and NH-8. KMP Expressway is infamous for fatal road accidents. NH-8, on the other hand, witnesses thefts and robberies.
Officials said the matter was discussed during a meeting last week, where GMDA’s additional CEO (mobility) Chander Mohan, who is also DCP (traffic) of Gurgaon police, had asked for a survey to identify the suitable spots for installation of the cameras at the two high-speed corridors.
“Speed detector cameras will be installed on 24.5km stretch of KMP Expressway that falls under GMDA’s jurisdiction. The objective behind the project is to bring down the number of accidents caused by rash driving and speeding. The cameras will help authorities track down the violators. The project will be implemented in association with Gurgaon traffic police,” a senior GMDA official said.
The expressway is notorious for road accidents and many people have lost their lives in the absence of proper patrolling. In June this year, one person was killed and 10 others were injured in a crash between a truck and a vehicle. Similarly, in March this year, five persons were killed in another road accident on the expressway.
On NH-8, GMDA plans to install cameras that can read the number plates of vehicles. “This will help not only in bringing down the number of road accidents, but more importantly aid the police in identifying the criminals involved in cases of thefts and robberies on the highway,” said an official. Several cases of commuters being robbed on the pretext of lifts have been reported from NH-8.
“We will be covering the stretch between Sirhaul border and Pachgaon Chowk in Manesar for the installation of the cameras. As of now, we plan to do a pilot project at Atlas Chowk and in case that is successful, we will install the cameras across the entire stretch,” said the official. “CCTV cameras are also being installed in all the underpasses in the city due to the high number of accidents reported there,” he added. All these cameras installed at multiple spots will be linked to the Integrated Command and Control Centre, where the feed will be monitored by a team of cops from the traffic wing. “In case of an accident or anomaly, they will be able to track down the driver and owner of the vehicle,” the GMDA official said.
